Steamtrains, engineers, historic photos (b&w and colour)
Flick through this anthology edition to see unique photos of a bygone era when huge steam engines pulled carriages of people and cargo across the United States. And if you’ve got the time, take the opportunity to read first-hand accounts by the people who worked with those trains, up close and personal.
Lloyd Arkinstall, for instance, was a ‘fireman’ in charge of feeding the fire that kept the Afternoon Amboy Peddle train running. He worked with a unique crew that he described as “moral underachievers” (p. 66) who gave him plenty of stories to tell.
If you’re wondering how these people ever got into the railway industry, take a peek at the article by James E. Satterfield. (p. 92). After the end of World War II, Satterfield left the Army Air Corps and stumbled into a job with the Oregon Challengers. But controlling steam engines isn’t easy, especially when you’re learning on the job.
